Residents in New Orleans East are urging the Sewerage and Water Board to address a water leak at the intersection of Alcee Fortier and Dwyer Boulevard they said has persisted for more than a year, causing damage to the street and wasting resources.
“This is like not only a waste of our money, but a waste of precious resources, and the problem continues,” said Sage Pellet, a resident in the area.
Pellet said the leak has spread, leading to additional issues, including a blocked road in another area.
“We gotta pay so many prices, you know, just to stand, and just to get the basics. It hurts,” Pellet said.
He added, “It’s literally a band-aid on a bullet wound. I really don’t like to use those violent words, but you can’t say you’re finished. I was a barber for 30 years, and if it was a haircut and you turned around in the mirror and looked and said, ‘Bro, you fresh,’ like no, we are not fresh.”
The Sewerage and Water Board addressed the issue earlier this month during a joint governmental affairs meeting, on Sept. 10th, providing an update on the situation.
“Alcee Fortier and Dwyer, we did get a leak detection company out there. This location is in an overgrown area. The location of the leak needed some additional technology to really identify the location of the water main break,” a representative said during the meeting.
The Sewerage and Water Board has not yet responded to inquiries about their plans to resolve the issue, leaving residents waiting for action.
