A New Orleans man has been arrested after he was accused of setting a fire under the Interstate 10 overpass in New Orleans East.
The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office arrested Isaac Lee Washington, 42, after a fire was set under the eastbound I-10 overpass at Crowder Boulevard in New Orleans on Saturday.
“Our fire investigators are solving arsons and making arrests at twice the national average,” said DPS Principal Assistant Chief Bryan J Adams in an issued news release. “Let there be no doubt: we will not stop until every arsonist is identified and brought to justice.” In this case, a fire under a major traffic artery could have shut down a key highway and disrupted thousands of travelers and first responders.
The New Orleans Fire Department responded to I-10 at Crowder Boulevard at 7:23 p.m. on Sept. 19 and requested assistance from the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal (SFM).
Investigators determined Washington intentionally set the fire and arrested him on Sept. 20, according to the SFM.
