The Plaquemines Parish School Board has provided an update on the fire at the Belle Chasse Elementary School.
The school board said the goal is to safely reopen on Monday, Sept. 28.
The school is working closely with fire marshals, restoration professionals and district staff to fully assess the building and begin the cleanup process.
Belle Chasse Elementary’s 100 hall sustained the most significant impact, and it is expected to be closed for approximately three to four weeks.
The smoke damage in the 200 hallway was minimal and contained in the electrical room.
The school board says there was no impact to the 300 and 400 hallways and cafeteria.
For the classrooms affected by the fire, the school will make temporary arrangements for classroom instruction.
The school said they will not reopen until all inspections and testing are done and the school is deemed safe for students and employees.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Belle Chasse Primary School was unaffected by the fire and will operate on its normal schedule.
