WDSU heard from a friend of the woman whose body was found in a bag floating in Bayou St. John last month. Earlier this week, the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office identified her as 44-year-old Benita Robinson of New Orleans.
New Orleans police said the bag was discovered Aug. 2 by someone living on Bancroft Drive near Filmore Avenue. The coroner’s office stated the cause of Robinson’s death remains under investigation.
“She was such an angel,” Eddy Roche, who befriended Robinson a couple of years ago, said. Roche told WDSU he and Robinson would often spend time together at bars on Decatur Street in the French Quarter.
“It’s horrible what happened to her,” Roche said. “It’s weird. Feels weird not seeing her around because we saw her, like, every day. she was eating and somebody needs food, she just shared. That’s the person that she was.”
Evelyn Bennett, Robinson’s sister, told WDSU earlier this week that she was single and had no children.
“We just want answers about her death, if anyone knows anything at all about how she ended up in that bag; we ask that you would please come forth with anything to help us get closure,” Bennett wrote in part in a statement to the WDSU newsroom.
New Orleans police are investigating Robinson’s case as an “unclassified death.”
