Austerlitz Street Baptist Church, one of Uptown’s longest-standing places of worship, reopened Sunday after being closed for nearly four years following a fire.
The fire occurred shortly after the church had completed an extensive roof replacement in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. Despite the challenges, the congregation remained united and celebrated their return to the church.
“I feel great for my members,” said Pastor Sherman Washington. “We had some ups and we had some downs, but through it all, we stuck together,” he said.
The reopening marks a significant moment for the congregation, who have waited years to return to their place of worship.
