The Lindy Boggs Medical Center is set to be demolished on Tuesday, according to New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno.
In her weekly social media video, Moreno stated the demolition will start this week, beginning on Tuesday.
Last month, the New Orleans City Council advanced a lease agreement in connection with the redevelopment of the Lindy Boggs site.
The site will be converted into a 4 million-gallon stormwater retention facility as part of a broader plan that could later bring housing and retail to the property.
The stormwater system, which will be located near Bienville and Conti, is designed to store stormwater in the basement and slowly drain it by gravity, with supporters arguing it will reduce flooding and benefit the neighborhood.
Council discussion on the matter focused mostly on cost, accountability, and the broader value of the redevelopment outside of the stormwater system.
Officials told the council that the roughly $16 million payment to the developer covers both demolition and construction.
Supporters called the project a “win-win-win,” saying it addresses blight, supports economic development, and shows the city is taking meaningful steps on flood protection.
Public commenters, however, questioned why taxpayers should bear costs tied to private property failures and argued that stronger accountability may require action at the state level.
Despite the pushback on the cost, the council approved the lease agreement with Mercy Partners LLC.
