A search involving multiple law enforcement agencies is underway near Robert and Ponchatoula after two Border Patrol detainees escaped federal custody Monday.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office made a post saying two suspects who were barefoot and handcuffed escaped custody near Interstate 12, Fire Tower Road, and CC Road.
The sheriff’s office told WDSU that the detainees were pulled over by Border Patrol when they fled.
One detainee is accused of breaking into a home, and is on the run again. A search is underway near that home now.
The detainees and the case they are involved with are unrelated to any TPSO investigation and the transport did not involve TPSO, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office described the detainees as Hispanic men who are barefoot and handcuffed in front.
One is wearing a long-sleeve blue shirt and khaki shorts. The other is wearing a camouflage shirt.
No information was provided about why the suspects were in custody.
