A Mandeville teacher has received a statewide award.
Fontainebleau High Teacher Katie Weber was named the 2027 New Teacher of the Year Overall Honoree by the Louisiana Department of Education.
The New Teacher of the Year is chosen for their exceptional contributions as a first-year classroom teacher, showcasing excellence in teaching and a strong commitment to student success, according to a news release issued by the St. Tammany Parish Public School System.
School systems from across Louisiana submitted applications for the state-level New Teacher of the Year Award program.
From this group of nominees, the Department announced nine finalists. All finalists were recognized and celebrated at the 18th Annual Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Awards Gala on July 25th.
“I am incredibly impressed by what Katie has accomplished in just her first year with our district,” said Superintendent Frank Jabbia in an issued statement. “The sky is the limit for this amazing educator and I have no doubt she will leave a lasting legacy on her campus.”
According to the district, Weber teaches ninth-grade English at Fontainebleau High School and is a proud product of STPPS, having graduated from Lakeshore High School. She earned both her Bachelor of Arts in English and her Master of Arts in English Literature from The University of Southern Mississippi.
As an undergraduate, Weber was recognized as the student with the highest GPA and the most credit hours in her graduating class.
She is passionate about inspiring a love of reading and writing in her students and strongly believes that a strong foundation in English empowers students for success, according to a statement issued by the district.
