The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office is remembering the lives of officers who died during an ambush in 2016.
Friday marks 10 years since the deadly shooting.
On July 17, 2016, a man ambushed East Baton Rouge deputies. The attack led to four deaths and three people wounded.
Baton Rouge Police Department Cpl. Montrell Jackson and Officer Matthew Gerald were shot and killed when the gunfire began.
EBRSO Deputy Brad Garafola was shot and killed while trying to confront the shooter.
The EBRSO’s Cpl. Nick Tullier was shot multiple times and wounded, and in 2022, he died from injuries sustained from the shootings years prior.
BRPD Cpl. Shad Montgomery was wounded by a bullet that grazed his head.
EBRSO Lt. Bruce Simmons was shot and wounded in the arm as he tried to help Tullier.
After the incident, Simmons returned to work and has since retired.
Since the shooting, a portion of Airline Highway has been renamed for the fallen officers in their honor.
