Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee-Sheng testified in Washington, D.C., before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to discuss reforms aimed at improving FEMA’s disaster recovery processes.
The hearing explored recommendations to address systemic issues within FEMA, with leaders emphasizing the need for fundamental changes to speed up recovery efforts after disasters and lower costs for taxpayers.
Most agreed that reforms should be state-led, locally executed, and federally supported.
Lee-Sheng was joined by former FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate and several others to discuss the nation’s disaster readiness and areas where changes are needed.
Over the years, several acts have been passed to address these issues, including legislation following Hurricane Katrina.
Most recently, the FEMA Act was introduced and is now awaiting passage.
