Stinging caterpillars were spotted across New Orleans over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
Puss moth caterpillars are peaking right now and are often seen around oak trees.
The caterpillars are seen twice a year around New Orleans, the first between June and July, and the second between September and October.
According to the LSU Ag Center, the caterpillar is somewhat pear-shaped, with a short, thick body densely covered with yellow, gray or brown hairs.
The caterpillar is about an inch long.
If touched, the hairs on the caterpillar are poisonous and can cause intense pain and itching.
Anyone who comes into contact with one should wash the area immediately and seek medical attention if necessary.
