The Causeway Bridge is back open after an alleged drunk driver crashed into the Mandeville toll plaza of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Sunday morning. Officials shared pictures of the crash showing how the car flipped and damaged the toll’s vehicle counters.
The Causeway’s general manager Carlton Dufrechou says the driver is from Mississippi and was allegedly under the influence at the time of the crash. He was injured and taken to a hospital. Dufrechou said the driver will be cited in connection with the crash.
The two toll lanes were damaged but three remained open following the crash. We’re told crews inspected the area and all lanes have reopened.
