A confirmed tornado touched down in Arabi on Friday evening, causing broken homes, damaged power lines, and collapsed branches, but the community remains determined to recover.
“It feels very good that we can walk around here and all the neighbors are out helping; they’re doing an amazing job,” said St. Bernard Parish President Louis Pomes.
In Avondale, 62-year-old Gilbert Simmons was among several residents whose homes were destroyed.
Despite this, he’s walking away with a positive attitude because of his survival.
“I’m feeling the luckiest man,” he said. “Hey, give me a Powerball ticket, I’ll win it right now.”
On Friday, the United Way partnered with Ochsner Health to bring volunteers to assist with cleanup efforts and provide financial assistance.
In Houma, recovery efforts continue, with residents expressing gratitude for the support.
On Friday, the Knights of Columbus hosted a food distribution event at St. Bernadette Church.
The group handed out nearly 300 free servings of jambalaya.
“People are stripping out floors in their houses; they’re just in disarray. So I think not having to cook a meal is a great blessing,” the Rev. Andre Melancon said.
