WDSU was also honored with a National Emmy Award Wednesday night for our coverage of a harrowing rescue during Hurricane Francine.
WDSU was honored by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in the Outstanding Regional News Story: Breaking Spot News category.
Former WDSU reporter Jonah Gilmore and WDSU photojournalist Matthew Demeester covered the rescue on live television on Sept. 11, 2024.
A driver was saved from a fully submerged pickup in New Orleans as Hurricane Francine prompted a flash flood emergency.
It happened around 8:45 p.m. at the Canal Street Underpass when a pickup drove around barricades and into extremely dangerous floodwaters.
Gilmore and Demeester were filming a live shot when he spotted the truck going underwater and flagged down a nearby police officer.
You can watch the rescue below.
A good Samaritan, Miles Crawford, was also in the area, and when Crawford figured out what was happening, he ran back to his home, grabbed something to break the truck window, and saved the man’s life.
