More than 45 million Americans are expected to travel for the Memorial Day weekend, according to AAA.
AAA says domestic travel is forecasted to be slightly higher than last year and has set a new Memorial Day weekend record with 39.1 million people traveling by car and 3.66 million expected to fly.
“Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, and for most Americans, it’s a three-day weekend,” said Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel. “Travel demand remains strong, and despite higher fuel prices, many people are prioritizing leisure travel during holiday breaks.”
New Orleans International Airport officials urge residents to prepare for a busy Memorial Day travel weekend.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) officials offered tips to improve people’s flying experience and reduce stress:
- Plan out a parking location early.
- Empty your pockets before security screening.
- Leave prohibited items at home to avoid delays.
- Have a valid ID ready for security checks.
- Remember 3-1-1 rules for liquids: Liquids must be in containers of 3.4 ounces or less, all containers must fit in a one-quart clear plastic bag, and each passenger is allowed one bag.
- Put phones in a carry-on to speed up the security process.
Another valuable tool is the AskTSA social media handles. Questions from travelers are answered in real time, even before leaving home.
