The New Orleans City Park driving range reopened this week following a $2 million renovation funded by the state.
The golf course received noticeable upgrades to the grass, flags, pin placements, and turf.
“They really spent a lot of money and did good,” longtime golf pro Larry Griffin said. Griffin, who has taught at the range for over 40 years. “I’ve been teaching here pretty long, I’m glad it’s like this.”
The upgrades were initially planned in preparation for the LIV Golf Tour, but last month, the state and tournament leaders agreed to postpone the June event due to financial challenges faced by the tour.
Hunter Porche, a frequent player at the range, was pleased with the upgrades.
“They did a great job with the upgrades, and I’m really looking forward to this putting green and chipping center to open up as well,” Porche said.
Those additional features are expected to open in the coming weeks.
For now, only the driving range is open, but players are already enjoying the improvements.
“It’s nice, I’ve just been here for 15 to 20 minutes—nice grass, nice new mats—the tech is working,” one golfer said.
City Park’s course is one of the most popular in the area, with the driving range used by thousands of golfers each month.
Griffin hopes the upgrades will encourage more players to return.
“For the people who have left here, you know, 30 years ago, and didn’t want to come to our driving —they ought to come back and take a look, because it’s really nice,” Griffin said.
