Louisiana residents took to the polls Saturday to decide which candidate would likely head to a runoff in June for the U.S. Senate race.

The U.S. Senator race in Louisiana was one of the most contentious on the ballot.
Bill Cassidy, who was seeking a third term in office after being elected in 2014, failed to advance to a runoff against his biggest threat, current Congresswoman Julia Letlow.
Letlow advanced to the runoff with just the early vote.
She gave up her seat to run against Cassidy with President Donald Trump’s endorsement.
Former Congressman and current State Treasurer John Fleming, who worked for Trump in his first term, was able to squeeze past Cassidy to advance to the runoff against Letlow.
As for the Democratic nomination, Jamie Davis and Gary Crockett are heading to the runoff.
Jamie Davis, a native of Waterproof, Louisiana and a farmer, is projected to make the June runoff for the Democratic ticket.
Crockett is a native of Tallulah, Louisiana, and is also a United States Navy veteran with a business background, advanced in the runoff against Davis.
The top vote-getters from each party after both the May party primary and June party runoff will run against each other on the November ballot.
