The Public Service Commissioner District 1 race is arguably one of the most important races on the May 16 ballot.
A public service commissioner regulates utilities for residents, such as power, phone lines, water and gas.
The commissioner fights for residents to have fair prices for their utilities. Their decisions likely affect residents’ monthly budgets the most.
Commissioners only answer to the voters who elect them.
The position is currently held by term-limited Republican Eric Skrmetta. His term ends on Dec. 31.

This district covers parts of New Orleans, Jefferson, St. Tammany and surrounding parishes.
Many of these areas have been hit hard by hurricane damage in recent years, as well as rising utility costs.
Democrat Connie Norris will face whoever wins the June runoff on the November ticket.
