An El Salvador man has been arrested and accused of rape, battery and theft.
According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a sexual assault complaint in Paradis after a woman reported that her ex-boyfriend arrived at her home and said he needed to tell her about an emergency.
According to the woman, her ex-boyfriend asked her to talk in his car, but then he raped her and stole her belongings.
St. Charles deputies worked with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office to arrest Hugo Lopez-Martinez, 41, of Metairie, at a home in Slidell.
When deputies arrived to arrest Lopez-Martinez, he ran away from the home.
He was later found in Mobile, Alabama, and taken into custody.
According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, Homeland Security Investigations-Houma told detectives that Lopez-Martinez has a criminal history in El Salvador, where he faces charges of homicide, illegal firearm charges and gang affiliation charges.
The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that he was in the country illegally and had an active order for removal.
According to the sheriff, the department is working to extradite Lopez-Martinez from Alabama as soon as possible.
