New Orleans Pelicans Executive Vice President Joe Dumars is flying in a different direction as he tries to help his team find consistent winning.
Dumars fired head coach Willie Green back in November, and last week cleaned house, letting more than two dozen staffers from basketball operations go.
Dumars next order of business, hire a new head coach.
WDSU has confirmed that interim head coach James Borrego still has a chance to become the full-time on court leader, but he is considered a long shot right now.
Others linked to the job include former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Darvin Ham and Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori.
Veteran NBA journalists Marc Stein and Jake Fischer report that former NBA point guard Rajon Rondo is a candidate for the job.
“League sources say Rondo has been interviewed for the post after serving as a special assistant on Doc Rivers’ Milwaukee staff,” Stein wrote.
Rondo, 40, has no formal experience as an assistant or head coach at the college or NBA level.
A 2-time NBA champion as a player (Celtics & Lakers), Rondo spent one season in New Orleans helping the Pelicans make the post season and upset Portland in the playoffs in 2018.
