Gov. Jeff Landry and his wife were at the White House correspondents dinner as shots were fired off in the lobby of the hotel.
In a social media post, Landry said, “Unfortunately, the First Lady and I had to be evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner alongside the President and the entire cabinet. This event is yet another reason that President Donald J. Trump’s ballroom should be built!”
President Donald Trump echoed those same sentiments to reporters at a news briefing following the shots being fired.
Investigators have a 31-year-old suspect from California in custody. He has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen.
Louisiana Congressman and House Speaker Mike Johnson was also in attendance. In a statement, Johnson said, “We’re grateful as always for the law enforcement and first responders who acted so quickly to bring the situation under control.”
Congressman Steve Scalise said, “I’m incredibly grateful for the brave members of law enforcement who acted quickly to protect all of us attending tonight’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. This is an event meant to bring people together. Violence has NO place in our country.”
