Louisiana lawmakers are reacting to the heartbreaking mass shooting in Shreveport that claimed the lives of eight children.
Gov. Jeff Landry issued the following statement on the mass shooting:
“Sharon and I are heartbroken over this horrific situation, and we’re praying for everyone affected. We’re deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers and first responders working tirelessly on the scene.”
Speaker Mike Johnson, who represents Shreveport, issued the following statement:
“The Shreveport community is mourning and working through today’s senseless tragedy. Please join us in praying especially for the families of the victims and all the first responders involved.
I just spoke with Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux about the situation and the multiple law enforcement agencies currently engaged in the investigation to pledge any assistance we can possibly provide.
What apparently began as a domestic dispute this morning ended in a mass shooting with 10 people shot, including eight children, ages 1 to 14, who all lost their lives.
Local officials are saying it is one of the worst tragedies they have ever seen. God be with the community through this terrible time.”
Louisiana Senate President Cameron Henry and House Speaker Phillipe DeVillier issued a joint statement on the deadly shooting:
“Our hearts are broken by this tragedy that is devastating these families and loved ones, and the community of Shreveport, who have lost so much this morning. As more details emerge, we want to express our gratitude to the emergency personnel who responded so quickly, and to our local and state law enforcement officers who are moving this investigation forward. Our thoughts and prayers go out to each and every one in the north Louisiana community affected by this senseless loss of life. We stand ready to assist in any way that we can in the days ahead.”
Congressman Cleo Fields issued the following statement on the mass shooting in Shreveport:
“I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the eight innocent children whose lives were cut tragically short in the Cedar Grove neighborhood this morning. I am also praying for the two women who were injured — one of whom remains in critical condition — and I ask that all of Louisiana join me in lifting them up.
What occurred in today’s early morning hours is, as Mayor Arceneaux said, perhaps one of the worst tragedies this city has ever seen. A crime scene spanning four locations, eight children gone ranging in age from just one to fourteen years old — there are no words.
I have full confidence in Police Chief Wayne Smith, Mayor Arceneaux, the Shreveport Police Department, and Louisiana State Police as they work through what is an extensive and deeply painful investigation. I also commend the Shreveport City Council for their swift response and their commitment to organizing a community prayer vigil for the people of Cedar Grove. I encourage all residents to stand together in this moment of grief. Shreveport is a resilient community, and we will get through this together.”
