The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a crash that left an officer injured.
Police say they responded to the scene at Woodland Drive and MacArthur Boulevard Thursday evening.
But before emergency crews arrived, neighbors stepped in to help.
“I heard a big, loud crash,” said Naomi Davis
Naomi Davis, a former pediatric nurse, was gardening when she heard a loud boom.
“Unfortunately, our intersection does get a lot of accidents, and it takes them a long time to respond, so I ran out there,” Davis said.
Davis says the driver of a Lexus SUV got out of her car after the accident, but when she walked up to the officers’ patrol unit, he was unresponsive.
“He was in there and he was unconscious, and it looked like he was trying to use his radio to call for help,” Davis said.
Her instincts to lend a helping hand kicked in.
“I asked him if he could breathe, and he ever so slightly nodded his head yes, I was holding the air bag up trying to wave air to him,” Davis said.
Heroic efforts from the woman who spent her life giving back, but she didn’t stop there.
“I took his radio, and I just said an unconscious officer is at the corner of Woodland and MacArthur and needs help. Because we get quite a few accidents here, and it takes them up to 45 minutes to get here,” Davis said.
The NOPD said it’s unclear what led up to the crash. Police say the officer was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.
Davis said it’s in her blood to provide care whenever she can.
“I would’ve did it for anyone, glad I was there to help out however I could,” Davis said.
