A Louisiana senator has proposed a plan that would give state police a larger role within the Department of Children and Family Services.
Sen. Patrick McMath says law enforcement should be involved on the front end, particularly for its 24-hour hotline and investigations into neglect and abuse.
“We need to shift that to state police so state police will coordinate with local law enforcement to respond much more rapidly,” McMath said. “Having state police run the call center will result in one less child dying, which is more than enough reason to make those changes.”
WDSU Investigates has previously reported on DCFS challenges, including staggering staff levels and backlogged cases.
