Jefferson Parish firefighters spent Saturday night battling a two-alarm fire at a Metairie home.
Crews were dispatched around 7:32 p.m. to a residence located in the 4700 block of Garden Street.
The Jefferson Parish Firefighters Association says crews began a fire attack operation using water stored in the first-arriving engine.
When they attempted to establish a water supply from the nearest hydrant, the hydrant was not repaired by the water department, according to the firefighters’ association.
They were able to establish a continuous water supply by extending hose lines to multiple hydrants.
Due to the extent of the fire, a second alarm was struck to assist with extinguishing the fire.
There were no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Jefferson Parish Water Department issued the following statement regarding the fire:
“According to our Jefferson Parish Water Department, the hydrant at 4720 Garden Street (near the scene of the residential fire on Saturday evening) was inspected on April 7, 2026, and was found to be in working order. Additionally, several hydrants are located within close proximity to the fire scene, including multiple within 500 feet, that were in working order.
“Jefferson Parish maintains approximately 16,400 hydrants and conducts thousands of inspections and repairs each year to ensure reliability. Routine maintenance includes checking threads, caps, water flow, and pressure, with repairs made as needed. The Water Department prioritizes repairs based on degree of dysfunction, proximity to other working hydrants, and other variables.”
Parish work orders show service was done on April 7th, 2026.
Since then, the Water Department says It appears the threads came out of the hydrant. Crews were seen on site Sunday night making repairs.
