Thousands of protesters marched in the streets in New Orleans. Many had signs in their hands as they chanted in opposition to polices from President Donald Trump.
“We’ve seen so many people deported, we’ve seen all of our programs focusing on equity, supporting our children, dismantled. Now is the time for us to continue to apply pressure,” said Alanah Odoms.
The “No Kings” protest returned to the Lafitte Greenway for a third time.
Protesters say their main message is using their voices to push back against what they describe as a power overreach.
“We’re just trying to build the movement right now and bring as many people as we can to fight against the injustice that so much of the country and other countries are facing,” said Kendall Berry.
Many protesters say they rallied in opposition to the ongoing war in Iran, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at MSY airport, and national guardsmen in New Orleans.
“As for National Guardsmen, we think them being here is a waste of resources; we think we should put money toward things like health care, jobs, and children’s programs,” Berry said.
It comes as the partial government shutdown has been underway for several weeks, impacting Transportation Security Administration lines at MSY.
“We condemn the deployment of ICE agents at airports; TSA employees should be getting paid to do that job,” said Carson Cruse.
But some leaders dismissed the protest, including a statement from the White House that says, “The only people who care about these Trump derangement therapy sessions are the reporters paid to cover them.”
