President Donald Trump announced Monday that National Guard members deployed across U.S. cities will now receive the same pay and benefits as active duty troops.
Trump made the announcement while attending an event in Memphis.
Trump specifically mentioned National Guard members deployed in New Orleans in his announcement.
According to Trump, the Department of War signed off on the pay and benefits and said it was because “they deserve it.”
WDSU reached out to the Louisiana National Guard to confirm the receipt of these benefits, but has not yet heard back.
The National Guard deployed to New Orleans to assist with security operations in the French Quarter during the one-year anniversary of the Bourbon Street Terror Attack, as well as Carnival Season.
Their deployment was extended another six months following Mardi Gras.
Approximately 120 Louisiana National Guard members are in New Orleans.
New Orleans in 2025 had the lowest crime rate in decades.
