More than 20 rabbits have been released near a New Orleans car dealership, and the Humane Society of Louisiana is working with other rabbit rescue groups to try to catch them.
According to a news release by the Humane Society of Louisiana, the owner of the rabbits released them near Mossy GMC Motors on Broad Street.
According to Jeff Dorson with the Humane Society, the owner admitted to releasing the rabbits because he considered them livestock, and when he wants to eat one, he catches it.
Dorson said he and other rabbit rescue groups are hoping the NOPD or LASPCA will fine the owner for neglect.
In the meantime, the Humane Society said the rabbits have been challenging to catch.
One rabbit, captured by Lola and Friends Bunny Rescue of South Mississippi, was pregnant with 10 babies.
Dorson said many of the rabbits have given birth by the dealership, and some have been run over and killed.
Dorson said the Humane Society is looking to vaccinate and sterilize the rabbits when captured, which will cost more than $1,000. The Humane Society is fundraising to cover these expenses.
