St. Tammany Parish Coroner Christopher Tape announced that his reserve fund is close to running out due to a lack of new tax revenue over the past two years.
Tape said he will propose a 10-year millage of 2.9 mills, hoping it will generate $8 million a year.
The draft will be presented to the council, and if passed, it will be on the ballot in November for voters to decide.
Tape also said he plans to run for re-election when his term ends in the fall of 2027.
“The meeting was organized solely by Councilman Cougle and Coroner Tape. As such, the administration will not be present. We are aware of the loss in funding when the Coroner’s Office millage failed in 2023. However, the office is funded through the end of 2027. We are working with community leaders to find a sustainable funding source for all agencies that are essential to our citizens,” said St. Tammany Parish President Mike Cooper.
