St. Tammany Parish Government has announced that the replacement of the U.S. 11 Overpass in Slidell has advanced with a $10 million federal allocation through Community Project Funding.
The $81 million replacement project would widen the bridge to modern standards, boosting traffic efficiency and safety for commuters.
According to the parish government, the bridge no longer meets the needs of citizens of St. Tammany and has been the site of multiple deadly crashes.
“This bridge is a safety risk for our residents, and replacing it is not optional – it is essential,” said President Cooper. “We have been working with our federal, state, and regional partners to bring our citizens’ tax dollars home to invest in our community. Once completed, this project will exponentially reduce concern amongst drivers and improve our quality of life.”
The project is being managed by the Department of Transportation and Development, which is overseeing the design of the bridge.
The federal funding helps move the bridge replacement forward by partially funding construction, which is scheduled to begin in 2031.
“The bridge is a critical piece of our infrastructure, but it has been dangerous for far too long. Too many in our community have lost their lives on that bridge,” said Slidell Mayor Randy Fandal. “Securing this funding means we are finally moving toward making it safe for everyone. I’m grateful to those who helped push this project forward for the safety of Slidell’s citizens and visitors.”
