A beloved New Orleans animal known for bringing smiles to thousands of people across social media is now facing a serious health battle.
Neuty the nutria, a local fan favorite who has become something of a New Orleans internet icon, is undergoing medical tests after his owners revealed he has a malignant mass.
The update was shared Tuesday on Neuty’s official Instagram page. In the post, his owners said they were taking him to the LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital for further testing.
According to the post, veterinarians plan to perform a CT scan to determine whether the mass can be surgically removed and whether the cancer may have spread.
The message asked followers to keep Neuty in their prayers while doctors evaluate the next steps.
Neuty has gained a large following online and throughout the New Orleans community, where photos and videos of the unusual pet nutria have brought joy to thousands of people.
Soon after the update was posted, supporters flooded the comments with messages of encouragement and well-wishes.
His owners say they are hoping surgery will be possible so Neuty can have more time to continue bringing joy to the many people who have grown to love him.
