The New Orleans City Council is addressing several controversial incidents from the recent Carnival season, including aggressive bead throwing and a racially insensitive image.
Riders on two krewes, the Krewe of Carrollton and the Krewe of Thoth, were removed from floats for allegedly throwing beads aggressively.
A passionate discussion also took place as Council Member Jason Hughes questioned Tucks leaders about a photo that circulated showing a dangling Black Barbie doll.
Hughes asked if the image was racist, but did not receive a direct yes or no answer.
“We can’t properly educate people if we’re not gonna acknowledge it. The act was racist, plain and simple, and it has no place at Mardi Gras, and it has no place in our city,” said Hughes.
The City Council is now working on a registry of banned riders to ensure those reprimanded for bad behavior are not allowed to join other parades.
