On the hardwood, the Country Day Cajuns have been there, done that. 8-time state champions, including just last season.
And good news, for the Cajuns – most of the talent that led them to that title is back playing in “Marsh Madness” including a pair of familiar faces, with familiar last names.
Curtis McAllister, the son of Saints legend Deuce McAllister and Kellen “KB” Brewer, the son of Pelicans Assistant Coach and former NBA player Corey Brewer.
The 6’6 junior and 6’4 sophomore, a duo that’s been instrumental in the Cajuns success both on the basketball court and the football field. The two creating a friendship that’s tied by famous sports fathers in New Orleans.
“I mean me and Curtis are best friends at school. We get along so it’s a good bond,” KB Brewer said.
“Both of the kids are wonderful kids. They don’t rely on that. They don’t even talk about that. Dads are both wonderful people. They let them be coached, and we coach them hard, Country Day Head Coach Mike McGuire said.
That coaching led the Cajuns to hoisting the championship trophy last year in Lake Charles, something the team feels poised to do once again.
“I feel like it gives us a lot of confidence going into the playoffs, knowing what we need to do, like last year. I feel like we’re ready to go on a run again,” Cajuns guard Brennan White said.
“We know we’re the defending state champs, and we really have to work hard because everybodys going to be at our necks and wanting to beat us,” Brewer added.
Third seeded Country Day earned a 1st round bye after winning their district and going 23-and-9, creating a path for Mike McGuire to win title number 7.
“It’s a matter of turning it up at the right time, getting hot at the right time, and making clutch shots at the right time. I really like our chances, and I really like our kids. It should be a fun run,” McGuire said.
Country Day hosts St. Thomas Aquinas in the 2nd round of the Division III select playoffs on Tuesday at 6 pm.
