Southern University will award a posthumous degree to a student who died in an apparent hazing incident last year.
Caleb Wilson, 20, died in February 2025 after being punched in the chest with boxing gloves in an unsanctioned Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. pledging ritual.
Since his death, the university expelled the fraternity from its Baton Rouge campus.
A total of five suspects have been charged in connection with his death.
Their next court date will be April 28.
Southern University announced Friday that during Spring commencement, when Wilson would have graduated, he would be awarded a degree.
The announcement comes one year after Wilson’s death.
Southern University issued the following statement regarding Wilson’s degree:
“Caleb Wilson will be awarded his degree posthumously during the 2026 Spring Commencement. The announcement was made during the Southern University System Board of Supervisors meeting on the one-year anniversary of his passing.
“Today, Southern University and A&M College pauses to remember Caleb Wilson, a beloved member of the Jaguar Nation whose presence we continue to miss deeply.
“Caleb’s vibrant personality, warm spirit, and steady determination left a lasting impression on classmates, professors, and friends.
