The first in a series of financial literacy workshops is happening Friday night in New Orleans.
The year-long effort is a partnership between State Rep. Alonzo Knox and New Orleans Katrina Commemoration Inc.
Monthly workshops will be held at Knox’s office inside the New Orleans BioInnovation Center on Canal Street.
Organizers say the free events will teach attendees about a number of money matters, including budgeting and investing tips. The hope is to make people feel more confident about their finances.
“I don’t know people who are financially secure who are committing crimes. I don’t know people who are financially secure who are homeless. I don’t know people who are finically secure who are out doing derelict things that are negatively impacting our community,” said Knox. “So once you get someone in a financial state of mind, everything else as it relates to quality of life, health, (it) all falls in line behind that.”
SESS 4-5, a local musician and community activist, is helping spearhead the effort. He encourages people young and old to participate, saying everyone can benefit from understanding how money can work for them.
“We know that with the information, people will have better options,” said Sess 4-5. “And with those options, they’ll make better decisions. (We want to) empower the citizens of New Orleans.”
This month’s workshop is happening Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
