The Louisiana SPCA has implemented operational adjustments to align with services available under City contract funding while continuing to provide humane, high-quality animal care and prioritize public safety.
“These adjustments allow us to focus our resources where they are most effective while maintaining our responsibility to animals, public safety, and the people we serve,” said Ana Zorrilla, Chief Executive Officer of the Louisiana SPCA. “Our priority remains to provide humane, high-quality care in a way that is sustainable and responsible for the long term.”
Here are the operational updates:
Public Hours
Intake and Adoption services will now happen Wednesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Field Services
Humane Law and Rescue responses have prioritized:
- Cruelty and neglect investigations
- Bite cases and dangerous dog incidents, as required
- Public safety concerns
- Sick or injured animals
Routine roaming stray animal pickup is no longer provided.
The Humane Law & Rescue will remain fully active and continue to respond to cruelty, neglect, and public safety concerns across Orleans Parish.
Animal Intake
The Louisiana SPCA will continue to intake small companion animals, including dogs, cats, guinea pigs, and rabbits. Intake of equine, livestock, and farm animals has been discontinued.
Disaster Response
Emergency and disaster response efforts continue based on available staffing and funding capacity.
Medical Services
Some medical services are now delivered more selectively, with priority given to urgent cases and animals in shelter or foster care.
Ongoing Commitment to Humane Care
Daily animal care, veterinary oversight, enrichment, and humane practices continue without reduction. These adjustments help ensure the Louisiana SPCA can continue serving animals and the community responsibly while meeting public safety needs.
