Incumbent Darren Lombard was ousted by challenger Calvin Duncan.
Duncan secured more than 66 percent of the vote to Lombard’s 34 percent.
Lombard’s administration faced a controversy surrounding records found at a dumpsite in New Orleans East.
In recent weeks, the Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has challenged Duncan’s exoneration in connection with a murder for which he was convicted in the 1980s.
After spending more than 20 years in prison, Duncan was allowed to plead to a lesser charge in 2011. Then, in 2021, the conviction was vacated completely.
Murrill claims that there are concerns over the vacated conviction.
This vacated conviction was the center of attack ads and controversy surrounding the race.
Duncan claims the allegations being made by the attorney general are completely false.
He will take the oath of office during an inauguration ceremony on Jan. 12.
