The Orleans Parish coroner’s office has confirmed that a deadly double shooting in Algiers on Wednesday morning was a murder-suicide.
This is the fifth murder-suicide in New Orleans since Sept. 25, according to the Metropolitan Crime Commission.
The New Orleans Police Department responded to the scene just after 8 a.m. Investigators say they received the initial call about the shooting around 7:45 a.m.
A 16-year-old girl died at the scene, and a 20-year-old man was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.
A family spokesperson identified the girl as Lizzell Palma.
Sources tell WDSU Palma attended Walter L. Cohen High School. The school issued a statement that said it was closed for the day, shortly after the shooting happened.
The 20-year-old man has not been identified at this time.
Witnesses tell WDSU the man followed Palma as she was walking to the bus and shot her before turning the gun on himself.
