Crews are working to battle the blaze after a massive explosion at an oil company near Roseland.
Heavy smoke completely covered the area, and even hours later, it left its mark.
“All of a sudden I heard this big boom and at first I thought it was thunder,” said Marty Broussard.
It wasn’t thunder that Marty Broussard heard Friday afternoon.
“Then I went boom, boom, boom, and that was when it let loose right there,” said Broussard.
It sounded like an explosion at an oil company near his home.
A shocking video shows the moments Smitty’s Supply near Roseland went up in flames.
Thick, heavy smoke covered the area and could be seen from miles away.
“It’s all gone, it’s here, but yet it’s gone,” said Scarlet Broussard.
The explosion mixed with rain led what appeared to be oil to fall from the sky, causing the Broussard’s outdoor pool to turn black.
“I come out here and I see my pool, which I love; this is my paradise,” said Scarlet Broussard.
Their paradise outside of their rural Amite home is charred.
“It’s going to cost a lot to get this cleaned up, and I don’t even know, I mean, I’ve got a garden, I don’t even know if I can clean that up with all the chemicals they use you know,” said
The explosion prompted parish leaders to issue a mandatory evacuation for people who live nearby.
Multiple agencies are joining forces to assist in battling the blaze.
Parish leaders say they are grateful that, as of now, there are no reports of any injuries.
“The best news we have is that there have been no injuries, which is a Godsend,” said Robby Miller.
Parish leaders say the cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
The mandatory evacuation order is still in place for people who live within a one-mile radius of the building.
