The New Orleans Saints have had quite a few bright spots throughout training camp practices and two preseason games.
One player in that number is second-year receiver Mason Tipton.
Tipton is the NFL’s second leading receiver after two weeks of the preseason with seven receptions and 154 yards.
“Just having some growth for me from year one to year two,” Tipton said.
In the Saints’ 17-all preseason tie against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tipton finished with six receptions for 100 yards, including a 45-yard catch.
“I’m just more confident I guess, really not confident, but I’m more comfortable as a player, I know what to expect, I know the ins and outs and the day-to-day of everything, just allows me to play more free and I think that’s really what the difference is right now.”
Also the difference this offseason is Tipton is running more of the route tree.
“I cleared out a lot of routes last year, which is great. Anytime that I can help a teammate get open if that’s my job, that’s what I’m going to do. I think the best part about this preseason I’m able to be the primary on some routes.”
The one thing that bothered Tipton from the Jaguars game is not being able to do more on quarterback Spencer Rattler’s interception late in the game.
Tipton felt like it was his fault the interception happened.
Tipton knows he should’ve run through the slant so cornerback Keni-H Lovely didn’t have a chance to make that play.
