Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry has declared a state of emergency at Angola prison to make repairs to advance the reopening of the solitary confinement section, Camp J.
Landry issued the executive order due to the lack of beds for violent offenders who need to be housed at the highest security level.
The executive order is in effect from Friday, July 25, until Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025.
Camp J housed hundreds of solitary confinement cells but has had security issues, cell malfunctions, including jammed cell doors.
These issues resulted in the cells closing in 2018.
