The New Orleans Saints’ offensive line has been a real weakness in recent seasons, but after continued investment, it’s time for them to become one of the best units in the league.
“They’ve done everything we’ve asked of them,” head coach Kellen Moore said.
“They’re working really well together. There’s a lot of communication, verbal and nonverbal those guys have to spend time and invest on. The pads is the next component. Thats the big piece that still needs to be added to the equation for the offensive and defensive line. That’ll be a fun battle for those guys for the next few days.”
Four of the five starters on the O-line are first-round draft picks with Erik McCoy, a high second-round draft pick, completing that group.
The center missed 10 games due to injury last season and spent the offseason focused on recovery.
“A big rehab focus. I spent pretty much until OTA’s rehabbing trying to get right because what happened last year, that can’t happen again,” McCoy said.
“There’s definitely a big difference with him out there,” running back Kendre Miller said.
“Erik is so smart. He knows exactly what’s going on… he’s been doing it at a high level for a good minute so it’s great having them out there.”
Playing next to McCoy is Trevor Penning who moved inside to guard this offseason.
“He’s doing pretty good right now. He’s got some technical things to clean up but the physicality is there. This transition to the interior is something that’s only benefited him and will only benefit this team throughout the season,” McCody said.
McCoy added he’s also seen a lot from the two young tackles Taliese Fuaga and Kelvin Banks Jr. The Center saying the Saints have their guys at that position for the foreseeable future.
