Slidell is eagerly anticipating the opening of a new Amazon warehouse, set to begin operations on August 20, bringing hundreds of job opportunities to the area.
The facility, located on Town Center Parkway, is expected to start receiving and shipping packages on August 20, according to interim mayor Bill Borchert.
“Their plan is that on August 20, the first package will be received and shipped from this facility here in Slidell,” said Borchert.
An Amazon official stated that the new delivery station will offer faster delivery services and job seekers can look forward to hiring beginning this weekend.
Despite previous permitting delays, supply chain issues, and timeline setbacks, some local residents remain skeptical.
“I will believe it when I see it. But it seems like it’s moving in the right direction. So I’m almost a believer,” said a resident.
The site is anticipated to create approximately 200 jobs, with starting pay at $18.50 an hour.
Shoppers are hopeful that the warehouse will bring lasting momentum to the local economy in Fremaux.
“I assume it’s going to be pretty well-paying jobs. The apartment buildings that they built already close to it, I don’t think are at capacity. So that’s more money coming into the community. Those people that have those jobs are going to spend their dollars here,” said another resident.
Councilman Trey Brownfield encouraged residents to apply for the new positions, saying, “All I can tell them is if you don’t believe it, go apply and I’ll see you next month. We’re going to get them to work.”
If the August 20 opening date holds, this will be Amazon’s first delivery station on the Northshore.
The community is watching closely to see if the first packages roll out on schedule.
