New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell admits she struggled in the public eye during parts of her administration.
“Every step of the way has been a journey. It has been very disrespectful, insulting, in some cases, unimaginable,” Mayor Cantrell said. The video caption says she addressed a crowd of Democratic mayors during the U.S. Conference of Mayors, held in Tampa.
In a video posted to Instagram, Cantrell mentions the failed recall effort, funded by Rick Farrell. The recall effort failed in March 2023.
She goes on to describe challenges she believes she faced in office: “You know the realities, the things we faced. first woman elected in the city … Black woman. The South, Jim Crow South.”
Cantrell adds: “In spite of it all, a lot has been accomplished.”
She was first elected to the mayor’s office in 2018. She was reelected in 2021. Cantrell is term limited and cannot seek reelection.
This is the mayor’s second trip of the month; she recently visited France for another conference.
Orleans Parish voters go to the polls on October 11 for the municipal election.
