The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office is warning people of scam text messages circulating.
The scam text messages appear to be notices containing information that impersonates the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles.
The person receiving the text messages is threatened with legal action if they don’t pay the fine.
Deputies are urging people to not respond to any suspicious messaging, click on any links, or provide personal information.
The Louisiana OMV also warns of a similar scam that’s been circulating for weeks about tolls.
“These texts are part of a phishing scheme designed to trick recipients into sharing personal or financial information. Clicking malicious links can install malware or steal data,” said the Louisiana OMV in a Facebook post.
The Louisiana OMV asks that people report the text messages to the Federal Trade Commission and delete them.
The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles is asking that if anyone is concerned about balances or suspended driver’s license to check the status at www.expresslane.org/DLstatus.
