We are nearing the three-week mark since ten inmates broke out of the Orleans Parish jail.
Two are currently still on the run, Antoine Massey and Derrick Groves. Massey has since been seen on social media in a viral video, in a home that has since been raided.
Officials were able to locate some clothing they believe he wore during the filming of the video. But as for Groves, it is a different story.
He appears to have vanished. WDSU Reporter Shay O’Connor was live from the Orleans Justice Center with the latest on the manhunt.
Law enforcement said Groves, a convicted killer, has nothing to lose at this point.
“When you watch the video of him walking down Baronne Street, you see he has a particular walk,” said Melanie Talia with the New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation.
On May 16, around 2 a.m., officials said Groves and two other escapees were seen walking in downtown New Orleans.
Law enforcement said its the last confirmed time Groves was spotted. Nearly three weeks later and officials said Groves could be disguising himself in plain sight.
Talia said, “His face is definitely out there. Perhaps he has grown some facial hair. Perhaps he’s changed the color of his hair. One thing he can’t change is that he is a very tall individual.”
Videos of Massey led law enforcement to raid a house in the 7th Ward on Tuesday. Officials did not find Massey but did find a trace. They found clothes they believe were worn by Massey during the filming of the videos.
Ronal Serpas, a criminology professor and retired NOPD superintendent, said, “He has nothing to lose. He’s been convicted by a jury unanimously of murder. He’s looking at the rest of his life in Angola.”
Officials said social media played a huge role in getting Groves convicted in October for the shooting deaths of two people on Mardi Gras in 2018. So it’s likely you won’t see him there.
Officials said it is likely that there are people helping both of the escapees.
“He’s not a community guy. So why not turn him in? It’s a disservice to themselves and the rest of the community,” said John Penny, a longtime criminologist.
Serpas said, “In the end, I think both of these men are going to run out of support. Friendship networks, food and clothing. They will surface and law enforcement will get them.”
Officials said Massey and Groves are likely still in Louisiana. As far as spotting Groves said,
“What I would say to people is be on the lookout. For a very tall individual with a walk and stance like Mr. Groves.”
Another interesting fact, WDSU was told Groves was still awaiting sentencing since being convicted in October 2024.
Officials said if he had been sentenced earlier, he likely would have not been at OJC, and unable to escape.
